WINTER WEATHER CARE FOR PETS
Oregon winters can be harsh, and pets are vulnerable to cold, ice, and storms. Older pets, puppies, kittens, and short-haired animals are especially vulnerable to cold. Here are a few proactive steps you can take to keep your animals healthy and safe this winter:
Bring Pets Indoors
Pets should stay inside during freezing tempreatures. If they must go outside, limit time and supervise them closely.
Provide Warm Bedding
Ensure pets have a dry bed away from drafts. Blankets or insulated pads help maintain body heat.
Fresh, Unfrozen Water
Check water bowls often, ice can form quickly. Use heated bowls or refresh water frequently to ensure access to clean, unfrozen water.
Avoid Cars and Chemicals
Never leave pets in vehicles during cold weather. Keep antifreeze and de-icing chemicals away from animals - as they are highly toxic. Wipe pets’ paws after walks to remove salt or chemicals.
Emergency Preparedness
Stock extra pet food, medications, and ensure your animal has proper identification (collar ID tag). Keep a leash and/or carrier easily accessible. Prepare an animal emergency “go-kit” in case you need to evacuate due to a cold-weather emergencies such as an ice storm, power outages, or windstorms.
